Polish Pottery Trip Through MWR

One of the things I was really looking forward to when I arrived in Germany was going on a Polish Pottery trip! Having heard such great things about buying the pottery at the source for such great prices, I was eager to go see for myself. This trip was not disappointing at all.  These trips appear to be offered in the spring and summer here at Grafenwoehr, and they go once a month. This is wonderful because if you want to go back, and you will, then you only have to wait about a month to do it! If you want to go on any of these trips book them quick!  Continue reading to find out more.

Here are the details you will want to know.

Who can go:

  • ID Card holders
  • Your guests as long as they are registered on the access roster of both Rose Barracks and Tower Barracks at least 72 hours prior to the trip.

What you need:

  • Tourist passport (not your military issued one)
  • ID Card
  • Credit Card and Euro (most stores take credit cards)
  • Keep your receipts for your purchases abroad for Customs officers checking
  • Euro coins for the bathrooms. The average price is .50 to .70
When you will leave:
  • The bus will pick you up around midnight, depending on whether you are at Vilseck, or Grafenwoehr.
  • Do arrive a few minutes early to make sure you are ready when the bus arrives.
  • The MWR buses will always pick you up in the overflow parking are of the PX. For those of you staying in the hotel this is a short walk for you.
Where you will go:
  • I am not sure if all the trips are the same. However I did spend some time talking with the drivers and this is their set route.  Just don't hold me to it.
  • You will stop four-hours into the trip along the Autobahn. Here you can buy drinks and food. Your driver will let you know how long you have. Usually 45 min to an hour.
  • Your next stop will be shopping.  Our first stop was two stores right by each other (Kristall Ceramika and another one across the street). After this we drove to four more stores.
  • At about 1130 you will stop for lunch. The driver chooses where you stop.
  • After lunch you will hit six more stores before you head home around 1430.
Other information:
  • If you are on this trip it is because you want to go shopping.
  • This is not a sigh seeing trip of Poland by any means.
  • The bus has boxes for you, and pens to write your name on the boxes.
  • Some of the stores will box your things up for you, other won't.
  • If using your credit card I don't have them convert if for me. I  let my bank do that.  On my home page I have a currency exchange listed so you can easily tell how much you are paying.
When you come back:
  • On your way back you will stop on the Autobahn once again for refreshments.
  • Once you arrive on post the driver will stop and unload all the boxes for that area. You grab your things, and load them in your vehicle and you are off.
Caring for your Polish Pottery (From Henry's)
  • Dishwasher safe
  • Microwave safe
  • Can be used for food storage in refrigerators
  • Dishes with the so-called grooved bottom may be used for baking in traditional ovens at temperatures of up to 280C (530F) and for heating on traditional electric hobs.
  • I always hand wash mine.
By the end of the trip I was shopped out! It was well worth it and the $69 was a great value. I hope this helps you out a little.
